BIG IDEA
Pentecost, the Coming of the Holy Spirit & the First Church
The Day of Pentecost (Shavuot) came fifty days after the Passover offering and celebrated the firstfruits of the harvest. Later Jewish tradition also associated the feast with the giving of the Torah at Sinai. Many Christian interpreters read Luke's account as echoing or reversing Babel (Genesis 11), but Luke does not state that comparison directly. Peter interprets Israel's Scriptures in light of Jesus' resurrection and exaltation.
LITERARY STRUCTURE
The movement of Acts 2
Discourse Structure of Acts 2: • 2:1–13: The Pneumatological Theophany (Sound like wind, divided tongues of fire, polyglot xenolalia). • 2:14–21: Prophetic Defense: Joel 2:28–32 and the Inauguration of the Last Days. • 2:22–36: The Kerygma: Jesus’ historical attestation, a death delivered up by God’s determinate counsel and foreknowledge (2:23, ὡρισμένη βουλή καὶ πρόγνωσις) yet carried out by hands Peter holds fully culpable, Davidic resurrection (Ps 16), and Exaltation (Ps 110). • 2:37–41: Apostolic Call to Repentance, Remission of Sins, and Baptism of 3,000. • 2:42–47: The New Covenant Community: The fourfold devotion to apostolic doctrine, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayers.
Acts 2:1-4
Theophany & The Sound of Rushing Wind
Wind (πνοή - pnoē) and Spirit (πνεῦμα - pneuma): Wordplay echoing Genesis 1:2 and Ezekiel 37:9. The sound was not wind itself, but like (ὥσπερ) a violent rush of wind. Tongues of Fire (γλῶσσαι ὡσεὶ πυρός): Reminiscent of the Pillar of Fire and the burning bush. Crucially, the fire divided and rested on each individual (ἐκάθισέν τε ἐφ’ ἕνα ἕκαστον), demonstrating the democratization of the Spirit to all believers, fulfilling Numbers 11:29.
Acts 2:22-36
Peter’s Kerygma & The Davidic Covenant
Peter grounds the resurrection in Psalm 16:10 (You will not abandon my soul to Sheol). Because King David’s tomb was physically present and unemptied in Jerusalem (v. 29), David must have spoken prophetically of his greater Son. Peter culminates with the Session of Christ: Jesus is seated at the right hand of the Father (Psalm 110:1), declared both Lord (Κύριος - Kyrios) and Messiah (Χριστός - Christos).
